What Rising Food Prices Mean for Our Seniors—And How We’re Stepping Up

By: Julia Santiago

Across London and beyond, the cost of groceries is rising faster than many households can keep up with. From staples like eggs and bread to canned goods and fresh produce, families and especially seniors on fixed incomes are suffering the most. Global inflation, supply chain challenges, and new trade tariffs between Canada and the U.S have all played a role in driving up prices.

More and more seniors in our community are struggling to put food on the table and the effects go far beyond hunger. A recent CBC News article revealed a sharp increase in older adults relying on the London Food Bank, a troubling sign of rising food insecurity among seniors in our city. At the same time, a new study from the University of Waterloo found that one in three older Canadians is at nutritional risk, which can lead to higher rates of hospitalization, illness, and a decline in overall health. These two stories paint a clear picture: many older adults in London and across Canada are not getting the nutrition they need to stay healthy and independent.

At Meals on Wheels London, we see the impact firsthand. For many Meals on Wheels clients, rising food prices are more than just a budget concern, they’re a barrier to basic nutrition. As the cost of groceries climbs, it becomes harder to afford healthy meals, especially those that meet specific dietary needs.

While food banks provide non-perishable items for those who can prepare meals, Meals on Wheels delivers ready-to-eat, nutritious meals to seniors who may have difficulty cooking due to health or mobility issues. Beyond nutrition, Meals on Wheels also offers regular social interaction through meal deliveries, helping to combat loneliness and monitor the well-being of clients. By providing nutrituous meals and regular check-ins to our clients, we help ensure that no one goes hungry or feels forgotten, even in times of economic strain.

Meals on Wheels London and organizations like the London Food Bank are working harder than ever to stretch every dollar, build relationships with local food producers, and reduce waste. These efforts reflect a simple but powerful truth: when our community comes together, we can find creative, compassionate solutions to ensure that everyone—especially our most vulnerable neighbours— continues to be nourished and cared for.

At a time when food insecurity is rising and costs are climbing, your support matters more than ever. Whether you choose to volunteer your time, donate, or simply spread the word, you’re helping ensure that no one in our community goes without a warm meal or a caring connection.

Meals on Wheels London relies on people like you to keep serving those who need us most. If you know someone who could benefit from our services, or if you’re looking for a meaningful way to give back, now is the time to get involved. Together, we can ensure that every senior in our city has the nourishment and support they deserve.
